Essential Sun Shading

The Falkirk Wheel is a stunning attraction designed by RMJM Architects to reconnect the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal and sited in a natural open amphitheatre at Rough Castle near Falkirk. This remarkable construction is the only rotating boatlift in the world and truly one of a kind.

In the large glass visitor centre (which houses the offices for Scottish Canals and the café and shop for the attraction) they were struggling with sunlight and glare and had installed temporary umbrellas in the space. The umbrellas didn't help the problem and so the client asked us to come up with a solution for them.

We carried out a sun path analysis to prove the required position of the 12 sails which we designed to protect staff and customers from the excessive sun glare within the glass atrium. The sails were installed over a few nights when the attraction was closed to cause minimum disruption.

Other examples of atrium sun shading include these reception shades for a large glass atrium in London.
